The Chyangra is a domesticated mountain goat native to the Himalayan region, renowned for producing
the world’s finest and most expensive cashmere. Its name derives from its natural habitat in the Trans Himalayan region,
locally referred to as the ‘Chyangra.’

Lomanthang Cashmere and Fiber Collection

At Lomanthang Cashmere, we operate our own cashmere fiber collection unit in Lomanthang, Upper Mustang.
As Creative Founder Director, I personally visited the breeding center at Charang and numerous Chyangra farms across
Lomanthang before finalizing this region. Witnessing the Himalayan goats and the exquisite fine cashmere fibers firsthand
was inspiring and motivated the founding of this brand, with the goal of supporting local communities and livelihoods.

Significance of Chyangra Farming in Mustang

Chyangra farming is widespread across Upper Mustang, but Lomanthang hosts some of the region’s largest farms. Its
unique environment, rich cultural heritage, and cooperative systems make it ideal for sustainable goat breeding.
Every household in Mustang participates in Chyangra farming, and many maintain cooperative arrangements to manage
goat grazing and other essential facilities. According to the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre,
Mustang is home to approximately 52,000 mountain goats across various municipalities.

Breeding Practices and Local Livelihoods

Most households in Lomanthang are actively involved in breeding Himalayan goats. Specialized breeding centers ensure
adequate shelter, nutrition, and veterinary care for the goats. Due to the high-altitude environment, goats require
careful attention to their diet to compensate for the limited natural fodder.

Village committees work cooperatively to sustain Chyangra farming, which supports the local economy while preserving
cultural traditions. This practice not only maintains livelihoods but also contributes to the global demand for
high-quality cashmere, representing a harmonious balance between traditional farming and modern market opportunities.
