Lumanthang Cashmere Production in Nepal
Design & Manufacturing Final Products
Lumanthang is dedicated to producing genuine Nepalese Cashmere by rearing the country’s largest herd of Cashmere Goats. Our commitment to regenerative agriculture ensures that our Cashmere is grown, harvested, and processed entirely within Nepal, helping to secure the future of this heritage breed.
All of our high-welfare Cashmere Goats are extensively reared in their natural habitat at Lumanthang Farm. They live in an environment that promotes their well-being and mimics their most natural way of life. While Scotland is renowned for its Cashmere production industry, the fibre has not been grown there for decades. The finest Cashmere is currently sourced from goats in China, Mongolia, Iran, and Afghanistan, and then processed in Scotland by world-class mills. However, there are increasing concerns about the ethical and environmental impacts of Cashmere production in these countries.
As custodians of the largest remaining farmed herd of Cashmere goats in Nepal, we believe this unique natural fibre is a gift from our goats and should be treated with the utmost respect. Every spring, we ethically harvest our goats’ Cashmere fibre, their winter undercoat, by hand combing rather than shearing, ensuring they are left with glossy new coats for the summer. Our goats naturally cast their Cashmere undercoat during the summer months, and we merely assist them in this process. Securing the future of this heritage breed is important to us. Once our Cashmere goats retire from having kids, they live out their natural lives at Lumanthang Farm as a “Thank You” for their fibre, offspring, and companionship.
Our Scottish Cashmere project is in its early stages, but we are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of fibre. We annually test our Cashmere for quality, studying the length, micron size, and curvature profiles, and collaborating with Cashmere fibre experts. So far, our average micron size is 15uM, which is classified as a very high Grade B. Some of our herd are producing micron sizes of 14uM, indicative of the highest quality of Cashmere, Class A.
At Lumanthang, we take immense pride in transforming the finest Nepalese Cashmere into exquisite final products. Our commitment to excellence in design and manufacturing ensures that each piece not only embodies the luxury of genuine Cashmere but also reflects our dedication to sustainability and ethical practices.
Our Cashmere journey begins with the careful rearing and ethical harvesting of Cashmere fibre from our extensively cared-for herd of Cashmere goats at Lumanthang Farm. This precious fibre is then meticulously processed to maintain its superior quality. Our design team, inspired by both traditional and contemporary aesthetics, creates timeless pieces that highlight the natural beauty and softness of Cashmere.
In our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Nepal, we employ skilled artisans who bring our designs to life. These craftsmen and craftswomen use their expertise to spin, weave, and knit the Cashmere into luxurious garments and accessories. Each piece undergoes rigorous quality checks to ensure it meets our high standards.
The result is a collection of beautifully crafted Cashmere products that not only provide unmatched comfort and elegance but also carry the story of sustainable and ethical production. By choosing Lumanthang Cashmere, you are not just wearing a piece of clothing; you are supporting a tradition of excellence and a commitment to a better future for Cashmere goats and their environment.
