Lumanthang Cashmere Production in Nepal
Design & Manufacturing of Final Products
Lumanthang is deeply committed to producing genuine Nepalese Cashmere by rearing the country’s largest herd of Cashmere goats. Through regenerative agriculture and responsible practices, our Cashmere is grown, harvested, and processed entirely within Nepal. As a result, we help protect a rare heritage breed while supporting local communities and ecosystems.
Furthermore, our approach ensures long-term sustainability. Instead of outsourcing production, we keep every stage close to its source, strengthening Nepal’s role in the global Cashmere industry.
High-Welfare Cashmere Goats Raised Naturally
All of our high-welfare Cashmere goats are extensively reared in their natural habitat at Lumanthang Farm. They live freely in an environment that promotes well-being and mirrors their natural lifestyle. Consequently, this results in healthier goats and superior-quality Cashmere fibre.
Although Scotland is renowned for its Cashmere mills, the fibre itself has not been grown there for decades. Today, the finest Cashmere is mainly sourced from China, Mongolia, Iran, and Afghanistan, then processed in Scotland. However, growing concerns around ethical treatment and environmental degradation in these regions have sparked the need for more responsible alternatives.
Ethical Harvesting with Respect and Care
As custodians of Nepal’s largest remaining farmed herd of Cashmere goats, we believe this rare fibre is a gift and must be treated with respect. Every spring, we ethically harvest the goats’ winter undercoat through gentle hand-combing rather than shearing. This ensures the goats are comfortable and left with fresh, glossy coats for summer.
Naturally, our goats shed their Cashmere during warmer months, and we simply assist this process. Importantly, once our goats retire from breeding, they live out their natural lives at Lumanthang Farm as a heartfelt “thank you” for their fibre, offspring, and companionship.
Cashmere Quality That Meets Global Standards
While our Cashmere project is still evolving, quality remains at the core of everything we do. Each year, we rigorously test fibre length, micron size, and curvature profiles in collaboration with Cashmere experts.
Currently, our average micron size is 15µm, classified as very high Grade B Cashmere. Impressively, some goats produce fibres as fine as 14µm, which qualifies as elite Class A Cashmere.
Designing and Manufacturing Final Cashmere Products
At Lumanthang, we take immense pride in transforming fine Nepalese Cashmere into exquisite final products. Our commitment to thoughtful design and precise manufacturing ensures that every piece reflects luxury, durability, and ethical craftsmanship.
Our Cashmere journey begins at the farm and continues through careful fibre processing to preserve softness and strength. Meanwhile, our design team blends traditional Himalayan influences with contemporary aesthetics to create timeless, versatile pieces.
In our modern manufacturing facility in Nepal, skilled artisans spin, weave, and knit the Cashmere by hand. Each garment and accessory then undergoes strict quality checks to ensure it meets our high standards.
More Than Clothing -A Sustainable Story
Ultimately, the result is a collection of beautifully crafted Cashmere products that offer unmatched comfort and elegance. More importantly, every piece carries a story of ethical production, environmental care, and cultural heritage.
