Lumanthang: Reviving Genuine Nepalese Cashmere
At Lumanthang, Cashmere is not just a luxury fibre it is a living heritage rooted deep in the Himalayan landscape of Nepal. Through patience, respect, and regenerative agriculture, we are dedicated to producing genuine Nepalese Cashmere by rearing the country’s largest herd of Cashmere goats entirely within Nepal.
Moreover, our approach ensures that Cashmere is grown, harvested, and processed locally. As a result, this commitment helps preserve a rare heritage breed while strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting environmental balance.
Ethical Goat Rearing in a Natural Himalayan Habitat
All of our high-welfare Cashmere goats are extensively reared in their natural habitat at Lumanthang Farm. Instead of intensive farming, they roam freely in an environment that mirrors their natural way of life. Consequently, this method supports both their physical well-being and long-term sustainability.
While Scotland is widely known for its Cashmere mills, the fibre itself has not been grown there for decades. Today, most Cashmere originates from China, Mongolia, Iran, and Afghanistan. However, increasing ethical and environmental concerns in these regions have sparked a global need for transparency and responsibility in Cashmere production.
Respectful Cashmere Harvesting Practices
As custodians of Nepal’s largest remaining farmed herd of Cashmere goats, we treat this fibre as a gift. Every spring, we ethically harvest the goats’ winter undercoat through gentle hand-combing rather than shearing. This ensures the goats retain healthy, glossy coats for the warmer months.
Naturally, our goats shed their Cashmere during summer. Therefore, we simply assist this process rather than forcing it. Even after retirement, goats live out their natural lives at Lumanthang Farm as a heartfelt “thank you” for their fibre, offspring, and companionship.
Quality That Meets Global Standards
Although the Nepalese Cashmere project is still in its early stages, quality remains our top priority. Each year, we test fibre length, micron size, and curvature while collaborating closely with Cashmere experts.
Currently, our average micron size is 15µm, placing it in very high Grade B Cashmere. Impressively, some goats produce fibres as fine as 14µm, which qualifies as elite Class A Cashmere.
Crafting a Sustainable Cashmere Future
At Lumanthang, we are not merely producing Cashmere we are shaping a responsible future. By setting new ethical and environmental standards, we ensure every piece reflects care, quality, and purpose.
Our work aligns closely with mindful living and global connection, similar to initiatives supported by Global Spiritual Community , where sustainability meets inner harmony.
